Catalina Serrano Duran was born on September 14, 1947 in the Guantánamo province, second daughter of the marriage between Miguel Serrano and Lidia Duran S.O.A, from a working class family. She completed her primary studies in the city of Guantánamo until 6th grade. She graduated, later, in 1961 she joined the army of literacy teachers (Conrado Benítez Brigade), teaching two people to read and write at the Clarita de Yateras; At that stage she was named a member of the Young Rebels Association. She completed her secondary studies at the Héroes de Yaguajay school in Havana and in 1970 she enrolled in the María Luisa Aguirre nursing school in Santiago de Cuba, graduating as a general nurse in 1973.
