Abstract

Introduction: dental restorations are probably the procedure most performed by the general dental professional. Currently, aesthetic standards are very high, the patient no longer demands only comfort. We are forced as professionals to master restorative techniques. Objective: describe the importance of polishing direct composite resin restorations in anterior teeth. Method: a bibliographic search was carried out in the Pubmed database, Scientific articles published between 2015 and 2019 in Spanish were selected with the keywords: dental polishing, composite resins; In particular, two clinical cases used for the description of the polishing technique according to the literature are mentioned. Development: most authors agree that the application of an adequate protocol in polishing improves mimetics with respect to the superficial tooth enamel, and also prevents the accumulation of bacterial plaque or recurrent caries. Conclusions: the protocol for finishing and polishing dental restorations proposed in the literature is described to be used by dentists in their daily practice and to achieve success and longevity of the same using an adequate time when using the instruments in order to not cause friction heat and not injure the dental pulp.
