Abstract

Introduction: Computed Tomography is a validated diagnostic technique for the prior study of the morphology of the root canal system in endodontics, as it is a minimally invasive technique that provides a high-resolution three-dimensional image that can be analyzed in multiple planes of the space without the overlapping of anatomical structures, thus allowing the specialist to make better decisions and establish an appropriate treatment. Objective: to describe the use of computed tomography for localization of the mv2 canal of the upper first molar. Method: The protocol was designed in accordance with Cochrane standards for literature reviews. The search criteria met the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA) guidelines. This being a bibliographic, documentary, exploratory and non-experimental, qualitative research. Results: among the 210 teeth evaluated in Souza's study, in which 192 did have MV2 and were treated endodontically, 156 presented a periapical lesion. In a study they analyzed 300 upper molars, they mention that 210 of them presented the configuration with the presence of MV2, and it was observed that 130 (61, 67 %) had the MV2 duct blocked. Conclusions: the presence of the MV2 canal in upper first molars and of apical lesions in teeth with an unfilled MV2 canal was higher in the studies evaluated; thus verifying that the presence of an unobstructed MV2 channel and the presence of an apical lesion are mutually dependent variables.
