Abstract

Introduction: rare or orphan diseases are an important problem in public health. The lack of timely medical treatments allows serious diseases to be detected in the newborn. Objective: design educational strategies on the importance of performing Neonatal Metabolic Screening in the newborns of mothers who attend the Tulcán Sur Health Center. Method: the mixed route was used, with a qualitative and quantitative paradigm. We worked with a population of 61 mothers, and 100% of them were taken as a sample. The search for bibliographic material on the subject was applied as a technique, allowing us to know the existence of a high percentage of ignorance about Neonatal Metabolic Screening. Results: the survey showed that 39% are housewives, 51% are mothers between 21 and 35 years of age, 57% of mothers have had more than 5 controls, 83% had received information about neonatal metabolic screening. The reviewed bibliographic material allowed the creation of a scientific criterion on neonatal metabolic screening. Conclusions: it was evident that there is a small percentage of disinterest in performing the neonatal metabolic screening test, which considerably harms the health of newborns. With the application of the strategies, the support and knowledge for carrying out this process was improved.
