Abstract

Introduction: supportive periodontal therapy is defined by the American Academy of Periodontology as the sum of procedures performed at certain intervals focused on preserving, improving and maintaining the natural dentition, dental implants, the periodontium and peri-implant tissues to achieve health, comfort, aesthetics and function. Objective: describe periodontal and peri-implant support therapy and its importance for long-term success, as well as to determine what procedures and action protocols are carried out in this therapy. Method: search for scientific articles related to periodontal and peri-implant support treatment and its long-term success. To do this, scientific information was collected from different bibliographic sources obtained from databases (SCOPUS, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar), assessing the quality and veracity of the selected information, as well as the updated content, reading and analysis of research articles. Development: studies have convincingly shown that long-term stability after periodontal therapy is possible if patients have adequate oral hygiene, avoid habits such as smoking, and are included in a maintenance care program after completion of the treatment. active periodontal therapy.
