Efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants in the treatment of non-valvular atrial fibrillation

Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common alteration of the heart rhythm; one in four people over 40 years of age will develop AF throughout their lives. Objective: describe the efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants in the treatment of non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Method: a review article was carried out on the efficacy and safety of the treatment of non-valvular atrial fibrillation with direct oral anticoagulants in articles published in the databases PubMed, Medline, Cochrane, Web of Science, Science Direct and Embase in the period of 2009. -2023, the search was carried out in the months of March to May 2023 using the keywords "atrial fibrillation", "stroke", "warfarin", "apixaban" and "rivaroxaban", "dabigatran", "systematic review", "meta-analysis" "clinical study", "clinical trial". Development: the literature reviews adequately provided important and highly relevant information about the benefits of using DOACS VS. WARFARINA, in the randomized clinical trials ROCKET AF, ARISTOTLE, RE-LY and AVERROES, the superiority of DOACS in the reduction of ischemic stroke and/or systemic embolism, reduction of fatal and non-fatal bleeding rates is demonstrated. Final considerations: direct oral anticoagulants have demonstrated greater efficacy in preventing stroke and a lower bleeding rate compared to warfarin.
