Gingival lesions in fixed prosthesis abutment teeth

Introduction: Fixed prosthetics is a restorative treatment of the oral cavity, which replaces one or more lost teeth. Adequate planning and hygiene are considered an essential part of the treatment. Healthy gingival tissue will determine the durability of the prosthetic appliance, however, diseases associated with gingival tissue are directly related to the dental organ and have an impact on the oral health of patients with fixed prostheses. Objective: describe the incidence of factors that cause gingival lesions in abutment teeth with fixed prostheses. Method: a bibliographic review was carried out in databases such as PubMed, Scielo, Elseiver, Cochrane. Results: there are several risk factors such as poor hygiene, dental caries, prosthesis fractures, abundant plaque and smoking, which influenced the development of gingival lesions during the use of fixed prostheses in abutment teeth, which, when not treated or controlled, caused a negative effect affecting the use of the prosthesis and, as a result, damage to the periodontal support tissues arose. Conclusions: abutment teeth with fixed prostheses show a high incidence of gingival lesions due to uncontrolled factors. It is necessary to provide sufficient information on the treatment and maintenance of the prosthesis to avoid the development of gingival lesions and the evolution of associated diseases
