Introduction: in a broad sense, the terms gestation and motherhood associated with surrogacy refer to the fact that a woman agrees to gestate a child to give him/her to the person(s) who have been entrusted with the child and who will then assume paternity or maternity. Objective: describe genetic cases associated with surrogacy. Method: a systematic review was carried out using the PRISMA method in articles published in the period 2016-2020, in the PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases. Results: surrogacy is presented as a fundamental medical and ethical option, supported by positive results and various applications. The ethical and legal aspects, as well as the psychosocial impact on children born by this technique. Conclusions: systematic reviews support the efficacy and safety of surrogacy, demonstrating positive medical results with acceptable rates of multiple pregnancies and premature births.
