Abstract

Introduction: according to the World Health Organization, malnutrition includes undernutrition (wasting, stunting, and underweight), vitamin or mineral imbalances, overweight, obesity, and diet-related noncommunicable diseases. Objective: identify paternal risk factors that influence 2-year-old pediatric patients diagnosed with chronic malnutrition. Method: an observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted in Ambato, Ecuador, in 2023. The universe and sample consisted of 30 children, selected based on the criterion of being short for their age according to the IMCI growth curves, 2017. Results: the results show that 53.3% of caregivers are between 20 and 29 years of age, of which 93.3% are female and 66.7% self-identified as indigenous. Conclusions: Paternal risk factors such as age, education, and incorrect weaning practices or inadequate complementary breastfeeding are identified as primary factors in the development of chronic malnutrition in the pediatric population.
