ABSTRACT
Introduction: There are few national studies that analyze the relationship between patient characteristics and the type of anesthesia used in inguinal hernia repair.
Objective: To characterize patients operated on for inguinal hernias and the type of anesthesia used from June 2024 to March 2025 in the general surgery department of Dr. "Juan Bruno Zayas Alfonso" Hospital, Santiago de Cuba.
Method: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted to characterize patients operated on for inguinal hernias and the type of anesthesia used from June 2024 to March 2025 in the surgery department of said hospital. The sample consisted of 130 patients who met the inclusion criteria.
Results: The majority of patients operated on were between 50 and 64 years old (46.9%), with a predominance of men (48.4%). According to the Nyhus classification, the highest proportion of cases were type IIIB (49.2%), especially in men. The use of local anesthesia was more frequent in the 50-64 age group (44.5%) and in patients with type IIIB hernias (49.6%). The Liechtenstein technique with local anesthesia was the most commonly used, being employed in 94.1% of cases.
Conclusions: Local anesthesia is an effective and safe option for inguinal hernia repair, especially in older adults and for Nyhus type IIIB hernias. These findings support the routine use of local anesthesia in inguinal hernia surgery, promoting a surgical practice beneficial to patients.
