Introduction: malnutrition represents a health problem of epidemic proportions, with a significant impact on general health. Its connection with major chronic diseases is well documented.
Objective: to characterize malnourished patients with adenocarcinoma of the colorectal cancer treated at the Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Provincial Hospital in Cienfuegos during 2023.
Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 74 adult patients histopathologically diagnosed with colon adenocarcinoma, selected through simple random sampling. Data collection was carried out in the Archives and Pathology Departments of the Provincial Hospital.
Results: a higher prevalence was observed in women between 50 and 59 years of age; the highest percentage was overweight. 41.8% of the patients had a high-fat diet. Furthermore, the majority reported a history or comorbidities such as ulcerative colitis, intestinal inflammation, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and other types of neoplasia.
Conclusions: malnutrition is a global health problem that causes genetic alterations capable of transforming the intestinal epithelium. It is identified as the main predisposing factor for the development of colon adenocarcinoma and is also associated with the onset of other acute and chronic diseases, including cardiovascular, metabolic, and digestive diseases, and various neoplasias.
