Chronic kidney disease in adults treated at the Baracoa Municipal Hospital

Introduction: chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a high prevalence and incidence in Cuba. It is associated with a high burden of morbidity and mortality; the situation is increasing worldwide, so the author decided to describe the characteristics of this disease at the Baracoa Municipal Hospital in 2021. Objective: to describe selected characteristics of patients with chronic kidney disease treated at the Baracoa Municipal Hospital during 2021. Methods: an observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample consisted of all patients treated at the Baracoa Municipal Hospital during the aforementioned period. The percentage was the summary measure; variables such as age, sex, skin color, risk factors, toxic habits, and renal function level were investigated. Results: female patients predominated (61.8%); the most affected age group was 70 years and older (41.8%), mixed-race skin color predominated (44%), the predominant risk factor was high blood pressure (30%), the most common toxic habit was coffee consumption, and 37% of patients had Grade III CKD. Conclusion: in line with the national and international publications reviewed, high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus were the most common risk factors for the development of chronic kidney disease, which most frequently affected women aged 70 years and older, with mixed-race skin and Grade III kidney function.
