Prevalence rate of acute lithiasis cholecystitis in the surgical department of San Vicente de Paúl Hospital

Introduction: one of the most prevalent pathologies is cholecystitis, which increases with age and in patients aged 65 years the frequency is between 15 and 30 %, increasing, in different series worldwide, up to 38 % and 53 % in octogenarians. Objective: to describe the prevalence of patients diagnosed with acute lithiasic cholecystitis in the surgery service of the San Vicente de Paúl Hospital in the city of Ibarra in 2022. Method: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was designed and developed in the Surgery Service of the San Vicente de Paúl Hospital in the city of Ibarra, in 2022, the universe was made up of 861 patients. Results: regarding the age variable, the mean age was 40.8 years (range 14–90), with a mode of 22 years, a variance of 327 67, and a range of 76. Regarding length of stay, patients were hospitalized on average for 4, 01 days, with a maximum of 44 days and a minimum of 1. Conclusions: regarding the sociodemographic characteristics of patients treated for acute calculous cholecystitis in the Surgery Department of San Vicente de Paúl Hospital, the mean age was 40.8 years, with a predominance of women, and residents of the surrounding area of this center, mostly from the cantons of Ibarra.
