Abstract

Pancreatitis is caused by the early activation of pancreatic enzymes, mainly in the Trypsin formed from trypsinogen within the pancreatic acinar cells causing their autodigestion. Objective: to clinically and epidemiologically characterize patients admitted with pancreatitis at the Hospital General Docente Dr. Agostinho Neto. Method: a descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study was carried out at the Hospital General Docente de Guantánamo "Dr. Agustino Neto", between February 2015 and February 2018. A total of 86 patients, who represents the universe and the sample studied, were diagnosed and treated in the surgery service department of the hospital, all with one or more previous diagnoses. Results: Necrohemorrhagic pancreatitis was the most representative (53.5 %), ages between 40 to 49 years and 50 to 59 years were predominated (26.7 % each), the most used surgical intervention was cholecystectomy (in 33 patients, 38.4 %), and most of patients did not present complications, (71, and 82.6 %). Conclusions: Pancreatitis does not present significant differences in its behavior in terms of sex, affecting both men and women, being more frequent in the middle ages. Surgical treatment should be the last therapeutic option and if necessary, minimally invasive procedures should be prioritized.
