Relationship between eating habits and mental health in dental students

Abstract

Introduction: according to the WHO, mental health is a balanced and indispensable tool in the lives of all people, it influences the activities to be carried out, thoughts, feelings and way of acting. Objective: identify dietary factors associated with mental health in dental students belonging to the Regional Autonomous University of Los Andes. Method: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out at the UNIANDES University, Ambato, Ecuador, during the period from November 2022 to March 2023, the study population consists of 1037 students of the Dentistry career, with a sample of 280 students, the following variables were used: age, semester, time until arriving at housing-university, city of residence, weight category. Result: the average score in the HA was 10.48 ± 2.34. 79.8% of the participants had poor or bad eating habits, students with bad eating habits have 6.88 times more risk of presenting anxiety 8, 83 times more risk of presenting depression; 6.82 times more risk of presenting stress and 7.76 times more risk of presenting sleep disorders than students with good eating habits. Conclusions: the study showed that bad eating habits of students caused by various causes such as lack of time to eat increase levels of stress, anxiety, depression and poor quality of sleep in dental students.
