Factors related to mortality from neonatal respiratory distress syndrome
Keywords:
newborn, neonatal mortality, neonatal respiratory distressAbstract
Introduction: the prognosis estimation of the newborn with neonatal respiratory distress syndrome is a requirement of the clinical method. However, no reference was found to date that describes newborns affected by this disease in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Agostinho Neto”. Objective: design a predictive scale of death probability of the newborn with this ailment adjusted to the conditions of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Teaching General Hospital "Dr. Agostinho Neto" of Guantanamo. Method: a case study was conducted in the 2016-2018 triennium (patients discharge deceased n=18) and controls (patient discharged alive n=145) and was carried out a mathematical analysis of 52 socio-demographic variables related to the disease or to the therapy, which were adjusted in a model of death probability of the newborn, adapted to the Neonatal UCI conditions. Results: in the patients studied the factors that determined the risk of mortality were: the gravity level Grade III-IV (OR 99.8; p=0.0000), an unsatisfactory response to prenatal steroid use (Adrenal Cortex Hormones) (OR 99.4; p=0.0000) and an Apgar5 score or less than 5 minutes (OR 35.1; p=0.0000). Conclusions: a model of death probability of the newborn from neonatal respiratory distress syndrome is designed to show that it had a high predictive capacity.
