Characterization of pediatric patients undergoing surgery for complicated acute appendicitis in Las Tunas

Introduction: complicated acute appendicitis represents a health problem in pediatric age due to its high incidence. Objective: to characterize the patients who underwent surgery for complicated acute appendicitis. Method: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in 106 patients operated on for complicated acute appendicitis at the Hospital Pediátrico Provincial “Mártires de Las Tunas” during 2019. Results: 38.67% of the cases were children aged 10 to 14 years. 48.11% visited the doctor between 24 and 48 hours after the onset of symptoms, 65.11% were diagnosed between 12 and 24 hours after visiting the doctor, 72.64% had surgery after 48 hours after symptoms appeared, 62.26% of the patients had advanced suppurative appendicitis. Surgical wound seroma represented 19.81% of all patients. 37.74% of the patients remained hospitalized for 7 days. Conclusions: the disease was more frequent in men and the age group most affected was 10 to 14 years old. Delayed diagnosis and treatment in most patients contributed to the appearance of a greater number of postoperative complications, with the seroma of the surgical wound being the most reported.
