Radiosurgery for cervix cancer in Guantánamo, 2014-2016

Introduction: radiosurgical procedure, also known as radiosurgery with loops, it´s a diagnostic-therapeutic option performed on an outpatient basis for the treatment of premalignant cervical cancer lesions. Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of radiosurgery in patients with cervical premalignant lesions. Method: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted at the Hospital General Docente "Dr. Agostinho Neto" in Guantánamo, from January 2014 to December 2016. The study population consisted of 1,153 patients attended at the Cervical Pathology Consultation who underwent radiosurgery for cervical cancer. For collecting the information, a documentary review was carried out using a collection data model. Sociobiological and clinical variables were analyzed. The statistical methods and techniques used were the descriptive statistics. Results: moderate dysplasia (372 patients), and severe dysplasia (403 patients), occurred more frequently. In 971 of cases the surgical edges prevailed; only 1.0% of patients had sepsis as a complication, a diagnosis of micro invasive cancer was confirmed in 2.9% of operated patients. Conclusions: radiosurgical excision with a diathermic loop is an effective and safety type of treatment, it proved to be a highly accepted procedure, which eliminates abnormal cells and thus prevents cervical cancer.
