Introduction: Ischemic heart disease is one of the most health problems showed in developed and developing countries. It is one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide and with the highest mortality rate. Objective: to characterize the behavior of mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Hospital Provincial Docente “Roberto Rodríguez Fernández”, Morón, Ciego de Avila. Method: An observational, descriptive, longitudinal, prospective study was performed throughtout 2020, which included 62 patients with acute myocardial infarction and ST-segment elevation. Data were obtained from the medical records. The following variables studied were as follow: location, status at discharge, age, Killip-Kimball index, and thrombolysis. Results: Six of the deceased patients (66,7 %) had anterior location infarction, 7 (77.8 %) were 60 years of age or older, 3 (33.4 %) had a Killip-Kimball IV classification and 5 (55.6 %) did not undergo thrombolysis. Conclusions: Anterior location, age, Killip-Kimball grade and no thrombolysis are associated with increased mortality in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.
