Abstract

Introduction: plasmapheresis is an extracorporeal process that facilitates the selective elimination of pathological elements in plasma, such as autoantibodies and immune complexes, playing a crucial role in the treatment of several immunological and autoimmune pathologies. Objective: to describe the general aspects of the application of the plasmapheresis technique in patients with autoimmune diseases. Method: a systematic review was conducted from June 2019 to June 2024 by searching electronic sources, scanning reference lists of articles, and consulting with nephrology and rheumatology specialists. Articles in both Spanish and English were considered. This search was applied to Medline, Embase, and Pre-Medline. The BVS and Pubmed databases were reviewed. Results: There are countless benefits and uses of plasma administration in immunosuppressed patients. Huihi Chen, together with experts in the field, observed an effective response to the therapy in immunocompromised patients. In their publication, they focus on a patient with IgA nephropathy who showed significant reductions in creatine levels after one year. Conclusions: The use of plasmapheresis as optimal therapy has been of significant benefit, as it has been in multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Baré syndrome, chronic demyelinating polyneuropathy, and for proteinuria that respond effectively to treatment.
